Pickup trucks have long been popular with U.S. drivers, and it’s easy to see why. Besides being great for towing and hauling large loads, modern pickups are stylish, comfortable, and packed with infotainment and safety technology. Recently, the Ford F-150 and GMC Sierra 1500 have been two of the best-selling full-size pickups in the U.S., with the F-150 topping the list and the Sierra coming in close behind. In this comparison of the F-150 vs. Sierra 1500, we’ll look at how they compare so you can decide which is best for you.
Exterior Design
The 2025 Ford F-150 has a surprisingly sleek and stylish exterior given its high performance and capability. Ford has managed to keep it looking modern throughout the years with relatively small but impactful design tweaks. Features such as available 20-inch wheels, chrome front and rear bumpers, and various trim-specific design elements all contribute to the F-150’s outer appearance.
The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500’s exterior also looks attractive and strikes the right balance between modern and traditional. It’s highly configurable, with different available wheel sizes and a distinct grille design for each trim. Overall, it’s difficult to say one truck looks better than the other, so the winner here ultimately comes down to your personal taste.
Interior Comfort
Given its size and utility, the 2025 Ford F-150 is an incredibly comfortable vehicle. The front seats resemble those of luxury SUVs and can come with heating, ventilation, and lumber adjustment. Smart design choices keep road, engine, and wind noise to a minimum. The climate control system does a great job of maintaining a steady temperature inside the cabin, which is spacious enough to accommodate passengers of all sizes. Despite the large number of available functions and features, the intuitive control layout makes everything easy to use.
GMC’s 2024 Sierra 1500 has a relatively comfortable cabin that provides plenty of space for everyone. Though the Sierra 1500’s seats lack the support features of the F-150, certain trims do offer heated rear seats as either an available or standard feature. Comparing the suspension in the F-150 vs. Sierra 1500, the GMC’s ride can feel a bit bouncy. And though the insulation from road noise is fairly effective, engine noises can get unpleasant at high speeds. Essential controls are easy to locate and use. If a comfortable ride is your main priority, you’ll probably prefer the 2025 F-150.
Powertrains
The number of available engines for the F-150 vs. Sierra 1500 is reasonably comparable, making it easy for you to find the one you need. The 2025 F-150’s base engine is a turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 that generates up to 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Other options include a 5.0-liter V-8 with 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, a turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, and a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 with an incredible 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. A hybrid version is also available, greatly reducing fuel consumption.
Under the hood of the 2024 Sierra 1500, you’ll see that the standard engine is a four-cylinder TurboMax that puts out up to 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. This can be upgraded to a 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.0-liter diesel engine with 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. Overall, the F-150’s engine choices produce more power than those of the Sierra 1500.
Technology and Safety
The 2025 Ford F-150 comes with an impressive list of infotainment and safety tech features, with some of the most useful ones being standard on the base trims. Standout infotainment features include a 12-inch touch-screen interface featuring SYNC 4, a digital instrument panel, and wireless smartphone connectivity through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Among its many standard driver-assistance features you’ll find forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, and lane-keep assist.
The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is also digitally packed but lacks some of the F-150’s standard features. The base touch screen is 7 inches diagonal, with a 13.4-inch touch screen available on higher trims. Wireless smartphone connectivity through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay is also standard, as are many driver-assist features, including forward collision alert, lane-keep assist, a following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, and automatic emergency braking. Though both trucks have plenty of available safety and infotainment tech, you get more standard with the F-150.
Cargo and Utility
Despite pickups being better-looking and more comfortable and technologically advanced than ever, they’re still ultimately judged by how much they can tow and carry. The 2025 Ford F-150 is one of the most capable light-duty trucks available today. It can tow up to 13,500 pounds when properly equipped and can carry up to 2,440 pounds in its bed, which is excellent for its class. If towing and hauling are a major part of your life in and around Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, you won’t find an overall more capable pickup than the F-150.
That said, the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is also a highly capable truck. Its maximum towing capacity is 13,300 pounds, which is just shy of the F-150. It can also carry a payload of up to approximately 2,230 pounds, which is almost the same as the F-150. These numbers place the F-150 and Sierra 1500 near the top of their class in terms of towing and hauling, making both great work companions.
