Fall Foliage Drives Near Jenkintown, PA
As the days shorten and the air turns crisp, the parks and creekside trails around Jenkintown transform into one of the most underrated fall foliage destinations in the Philadelphia area. You don’t have to drive far, or even leave Montgomery County, to find genuinely spectacular color. Here’s a local guide to the best fall foliage spots near Jenkintown, brought to you by John Kennedy Ford of Jenkintown.
Pennypack Trail and Lorimer Park
Right in our own backyard, the Pennypack Trail runs from Rockledge Borough north into Abington Township, offering scenic views of Pennypack Creek, its cliffs, and surrounding woodlands along the way. The trail connects directly to Lorimer Park, a 230-acre stretch of woods and meadows just across Moreland Road, giving you miles of connected trail without ever needing to get in the car. Built on a former rail line, the crushed-stone path is level and easy to walk or bike, making it one of the most accessible fall color routes near Jenkintown.
Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust
A bit further along Creek Road at Terwood Road, the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust offers 11 miles of woodland, meadow, and creekside trails across more than 850 acres of preserved open space. The Raytharn Trail winds through sweeping views of the 160-acre Raytharn Farm, while the Peak Trail cuts through old-growth forest that puts on a genuinely impressive show every October. It’s one of the quieter, more peaceful fall foliage spots in the region, and a favorite for birdwatchers and photographers alike.
Pennypack Park
Continuing south toward Philadelphia, Pennypack Park features a 14-mile trail system along Pennypack Creek, with mature trees that create a stunning canopy of color each fall. Along the way, you’ll pass the King’s Highway Bridge, built in 1697 and considered the oldest stone bridge still in use in the United States, adding a bit of history to the scenery.
Fort Washington State Park
A short drive west, Fort Washington State Park connects to the broader Wissahickon Trail network and offers an easy-to-reach observation deck overlooking much of Montgomery County. It’s a great add-on stop if you want to see a wider sweep of fall color without committing to a long hike.
The Best Way to Take In the Season
Whether you’re walking the Pennypack Trail right from Jenkintown or driving out toward Fort Washington, a fall foliage outing is a lot more enjoyable in a vehicle built for changing conditions. Ford’s lineup of SUVs, including the Escape, Explorer, and Bronco, all offer available or standard four-wheel drive, so wet leaves on a shaded trail-adjacent road won’t cut your outing short.
